Press Release - March 31, 2013
John Barger named president of LDS Church’s Deseret Trust Co.
John Barger, 57, has been named president and CEO of Deseret Trust Co., an entity of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that provides fiduciary services to those wanting to benefit the Church and its charities.
He replaces David Moore who retired in March.
Barger is a retired major in the U.S. Air Force and a former senior vice president with Davidson Trust Co. He comes to Deseret Trust Co., with an extensive background in financial planning services.
“People use their means to express their passions,” Barger said. While there are members who transfer significant assets to the Church in trusts to be used at their death, “there is a broad and growing group of average families who make philanthropic donations through donor advised funds with amounts as low as $5,000. This money is then directed to Church purposes like missionary funds or humanitarian aid, or to other charities as the donor recommends,” he said.
Barger received a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and a master’s of education. He is married to Lauri (Packard) Barger. They are parents of four children and eight grandchildren. He was born in Atlanta, Ga., and after moving around the world with the military, settled in Montana. He served as mission president in the Kenya Nairobi Mission from 2004-2007.
David Moore retires after a 43-year career in financial services with nine years as president and CEO of Deseret Trust Co.
