Important Information about Opening a New Account

NOTE: If you are not familiar with donor-advised funds, we encourage you to watch this brief video before opening a new DAF. Additional information about Deseret Trust Company DAFs may be found here.

Deseret Trust Company is a Utah nonprofit corporation and state-regulated financial institution. We charge fees to cover our costs and meet regulatory requirements. Deseret Trust Company is an integrated auxiliary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Basic information about our DAFs:

  • Minimum Contribution: The minimum contribution amount to open a new DAF is $5,000. The most common way to fund an account is with a gift of cash or marketable securities. If you have questions about other gift options, please contact us. After the initial contribution has been made, a minimum balance of $500 is required.
  • Fees: To help cover the costs associated with maintaining the funds, each DAF is charged an administrative fee that is calculated using the average daily balance of the fund, taken monthly. Deseret Trust Company Fee Schedule
  • Investment Allocation Options: When you open your DAF, you will be asked to select an investment allocation for your fund. Requests to change the investment allocation may be made no more than once per quarter.
  • Giving to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or its institutions of higher education: On a two-year rolling average, at least 40% of recommended grants from the DAF must be directed to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or its institutions of higher education (i.e., BYU, BYU-Idaho, BYU-Hawaii, BYU-Pathway, and Ensign College). Up to 60% may be directed to other charities compatible with Church values.
  • Grant Distributions: When you recommend a grant from your DAF, staff members complete a due diligence review of the grantee organization and grant purpose. Once approved, grants are distributed at the beginning of the following month.

For additional information, please refer to the Deseret Trust Company Rules and Policies Regarding Donor-Advised Funds when you complete the application. You may also contact our staff during regular business hours, or the Philanthropies department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, Federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens an account.

What this means for you: When you open an account, we will ask for your name, address, date of birth, and other information that will allow us to identify you. We may also ask to see your driver’s license or other identifying documents.
